Some, it appears, came to the US and also settled in New Hanover, NC. This is a priority to search this year.
John married Mary. Mary was born about 1720.
This given name of "Mary" is by fuzzy oral history only. - rhg

Issac and Mary's daughter, Margaret Saffire "Sena" Hendry b. 11 Nov 1824 Longcreek, New Hanover Co NC, died Pender Co NC - rhg6. Robert B. They had the following children:
9. Alexander Hendry Jr. (Alexander , Progenitor ) was born about 1743 in Isle of Arran,Scotland. He died on 4 Sep 1819 in White Oak Plantation,New Hanover Co NC.
First of all, we are NOT sure that the Alexander who md. Thankful Comartie is the son of Alexander and
Flora. Since there is history of the area including Alexander and Flora going back to the Argyll Colony of 1739 -
it assumed, by aome, that he could NOT be the father of Alexander who md. Thankful Cromatie since the Cromartie Bible states that Alexander arrived in the US on the Pearl in 1767.Progenitor of the "White Oak Henry/Hendrys" of New Hanover Co NC. Source for this line comes from Wynnette Tucker Welch [ wtw@l-a-net.net ] Alexander came to America on ship "Pearl" Dec 1767 and was allocated 100 acres of land 12 Dec 1767. On the same ship was Catherine Hendry. Later, Alexander named one of his dau. Catherine. Since it was usual for females to list their SURNAME rather than their married names - we must, for the moment, assume that Catherine was a HENDRY. Sister or mother? Statement that Alexander was b. in Isle of Arran, Scotland found in William Cromartie Family Bible. - rhg Some believe Alexander's father to be Robert B. Hendry. More data has turned the opinion that his father was, indeed, an Alexander. Perhaps Alexander's grandfather was a Robert. - rhg 1800 Census for Bladen Co, NC substantiates the number of children and age groups: Alexander - between 26 and 45; his wife ditto; two sons under 10; one son between 10-16; three daughters under 10; one daughter between 10 - 16; 5 slaves. - rhg
Alexander's will was signed 10 July 1819; codicil was signed 2 Sep 1819; proved New Hanover court in Feb of 1820; and is recorded in Will Book C, p. 171. His sons, Robert and William, were appointed Exec; he died 4 Sept 1819, two days after he wrote the codicil. -rhg
LAND: 1767 allocated 100 acres of land; by 1784, in Capt Anders district, an Alex. Henry with 250 acres, a James Henry with 60 acres, and a William Cromartie with 350 acres. In Capt. Johnson's district is a Robert Henry with 100 acres. Both William Cromartie and Alexander Hendry appear in the 1800 Bladen Co NC census - Capt. Anders district. Wm. Cromartie is over 45 yrs. Alexander Hendry is between 26 and 45, with a wife same age, two sons under 10, one son between 10 and 16, three daughters under 10, one between 10 and 16, and five slaves.
In early 1800's, Alexander began buying up land in New Hanover Co. around White Oak Creek. Deed Nov 30, 1815 100 acres on both sides of the prong of White Oak Swamp adjacent to James Hendry's land.
Thw White Oak Plantation was enormous by the time of Alexander's son, Alexander's death in 1869 - 3,447. Within 3 generations. Wow!
We know they were members of the Black River Chapel for in his estate was mentioned, 1822, two seats in Black River Chapel @ $16.00. Also, their son, Alexander III who died in 1869, is buried in the church graveyard. Alexander II was buried in the Hendry graveyard on his own land.
Much of this data came from "The Hendrys from The Isle of Arran Scotland w/special memories of our Henry
grandmother", contributed by Adelaide M. Childs, Jean B. Pyne, and Betsy M. Ravenel. Compiled and Edited by Sarah Porter Carroll. About 1992. - rhg "The names and dates for the 10 children came from the old Hendry family Bible which Buddy Hubbard had for a long time, then gave it to a cousin, Dr. James Robinson, of Wilmington NC who ahs it now (1992)". - rhg24 Jan 1797 - Luke WHITE of Sampson Co. to Alexander HENRY - 300 acres, a negro boy about 18 yrs. named Jim. Wit: John McMillan, Luke L. White. Feb Term 1798. J. S. Purdie, C. C. - rhg

Thankful Cromartie Hendry is listed in the 1820 New Hanover census as head of household with one son (10-16) two sons (18-26) and no daughters at home. The son (10-16) would have been Alexander III, for he was 15 when his father died. - rhg
They had the following children:
+ 21 M i Robert W. Hendry Sr. 22 F ii Elizabeth Hendry was born on 2 Feb 1786 in New Hanover Co,NC. She died in May 1788.

Inherited 600 acres on Kitty Branch of Long Creek and $500. from income of the mill if he continues to operate it, and 1/6 the profits. - rhg Her source was the Porter-Carroll book. - rhg It is said that he left the area; removed to TN and then ARK. - rhgJohn married (1) Hannah Cooper on 19 Jan 1825 in NC?. Another family source claims death date of 16 Aug 1817. - rhg13. James Hendry (Alexander , Progenitor ) was born about 1750 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. He died on 25 Nov 1816 in New Hanover Co NC. He was buried in Henry Cem.,Merle Johnson estate,Pender Co NC.
Original death date given is actually the date his will was written. Will was probated the following year - 1817. -rhg We had originally thought that this James was the one of "Turkey Branch." Reread 1911 letters and other sources; it comes down to this (from Colvin's letter): James Henry and wife, came from Scotland; settled Turkeybranch 12 miles north of Wilmington; east side of Colvin's Creek, New Hanover Co NC. Settled 1740. - This is a different James. We are currently correcting the gedcom to reflect this. Actual estate records and land deeds are being used to document these lines. - rhg
Cemetery data from Anna and Roger Dodson. - "James Henry, d. Nov 1816, age 66." and "Mary, wife of James Henry, d. 25 Feb 1819, age about 57." - rhg
James married Mary "Polly" Murphy daughter of Patrick Murphy and Elizabeth Kelso in 1787. Mary was born in 1762 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. She died on 25 Feb 1819 in Pender Co NC. She was buried in Henry Cem. Co Rd # 1207 on Johnson estate; Black River Pres. Chapel Cem.,Ivanhoe NC.
Still checking this out; there are two Mary Murphy's (one the daughter of Finley and the other, a daughter of Patrick) and each married a James Hendry (seemingly unrelated). They are often confused with each other. - rhg
d/o Patrick Murphy and Eliz. Kelso, both of Arran, Scotland. According to "The Heritage of Sampson Co NC" - Mary was the 4th child of Patrick Murphy and Eliz. Kelso. - rhg Anna and Roger Dodson have made numerous trips to Raleigh for actual records. Last trip netted some conflicting data: James and Mary are buried in the Henry Cem., on the Johnson estate. Directions: on County Road # 1207; on right between Co #1206 and Co # 1210. We must now challenge the Black River interment location. List of Black River inventory coming soon. -7/18/02 - rhg Another family source claim she died 25 Feb 1818 and another claims 25 Feb 1819. - rhg Tombstone data by the Dodson's revealed that, per her tombstone, Mary "Polly" died "25 Feb 1819, age about 57." Frances Lamb Daughtry insists her death date as 25 Mar 1819. - rhg
James and Mary had the following children:
+ 33 M i Charles Hendry + 34 F ii Catherine Hendry + 35 F iii Margaret "Peggy" Hendry + 36 F iv Jane Hendry + 37 F v Elizabeth Hendry + 38 F vi Flora Hendry + 39 F vii Mary M Hendry 14. William Hendry (Alexander , Progenitor ) was born about 1758.
Harvey book claims he died 22 May 1833 [not his death date; date of obit] and was the Ruling Elder of the Black River Presbyterian Church [wrong William, wrong family]. They were living on Colvin's Creek in 1774. Death date conflicting in Harvey book - stating the newspaper obit was dated 7 days *before* his death date - and she still has the wrong William. She is refering to the death dates of "Long Billy" Hendry, son of Neal and Jennet Hendry. Long Billy left a will naming all his children. - rhg
William married (1) Barbara Murphy daughter of Finlay Murphy Loyalilst and Catherine Hendry. Barbara was born in 1774 in Isle of Arran,Scotland. She died on 18 Nov 1836.
Age estimated from 1774 passenger list of DIANE where she is listed as 1/2 in age. - rhg Born at Colvin's Creek, NC - per Harvey's book. - rhg Peggy Murphy's Bible (sis of Cornelius) shows Barbara died 18 Nov 1836; aged 62. - rhg
William and Barbara had the following children:
William married (2) Elizabeth Murphy daughter of Finlay Murphy Loyalilst and Catherine Hendry. Elizabeth was born calculated 1766 in Arran,Scotland.
If you wish to add anything; make suggestions and/or corrections, please contact me at hendry@usit.net.William and Murphy Records and Related Famililes, 1949 - states she never married. Harvey book states she married William, son of Alexander, the Wm. who married Eliz.'s sister, Barbara. Not sure; we *are* sure that Barbara md. William Hendry, son of Alexander. - rhg Family sources seem to believe she was born 1766 - at first we thought this was unplausible. We searched for a more reliable source: 1774, "Diana" ships arrival in Wilmington NC - shows both Finlay and Patrick Murphy's wives and families. Elizabeth is clearly shown as age 8; hence, the approx birthyear of 1766. - rhg
