Descendants of Progenitor Hendry

Second Generation

2. John Hendry (Progenitor ) was born about 1690 in Scotland.

This John is the possible father of John, Alexander and Robert, at least. It was through the naming convention of the grandsons that makes this "leap" possible... until more data is found. These families were far too close to be
occasional relatives, in my opinion. For the moment, and for ease in handling the databases, we are only "scotch-taping" John in as the patriarch. - rhg

John married Unknown.

They had the following children:

+ 5 M i John Hendry
+ 6 M ii Robert B. Hendry
7 M iii Daniel Hendry was born about 1720 in Isle of Arran Scotland.

This Daniel was found in the Kilbride Parish, Bute Co, Isle of Arran, SCT
marriage recs. We have nothing to indicate that Daniel is the son of John -
however, we wanted him for reference. - rhg

3. Alexander Hendry I (Progenitor ) was born about 1696 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. He died in White Oaks Plantation,nr Ivanhoe,NC.

"Alexander Hendry (1) moved from the Isle of Arran, Scotland to New Hanover Co, N.C. about 1729 according to "The Heritage of Sampson Co, N.C.". The date is more likely the late 1740's when hundreds from Arran and neighboring peninsula of Kintyre came to Wilmington, N.C. We have 1750's land records where Alexander purchased what would be, in later years, the White Oak Plantation. ... Alexander probably died before 1790 as his name does not appear in the census of that year." - Letter dated 3 Jan 1921 from Carr Henry, descendant and Hendry researcher, to James H. Robinson. From Porter-Carroll Papers. After returning from a visit to Scotland, Carr Henry began to believe that "... Robert (not Alexander) Hendry and Catherine McNargid (gaelic form of Sillars) came to North Carolina..."

He also notes that Robert Hendry was a captain of a company of loyalists at Charleston SC in 1781, and JAMES, ALEXANDER, CHARLES and WILLIAM Hendry were in his company." We discuss this later in the PROVING GROUNDS area of the Hendry website. These Hendrys were *labeled* as Loyalists but we have evidence that would suggest that they were captives - not loyalists. - rhg

What we do NOT know is the exact relationship this Alexander has to the Robert Hendry b. 1752 family. An uncle? Grand Uncle? Grandfather? We must conclude, at this point, that the relationship must be closer than casual - as they both came from Arran, are allied to and married into same families, etc. It does appear that James Hendry, brother of Robert Hendry b.1752, seems to parallel Alexander's family more so than Robert. - rhg

Alexander married Flora Sellars / Sillars calculated 1722 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. Flora was born about 1704 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. She died in New Hanover Co NC.

They had the following children:

8 M i John Hendry was born about 1740 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. He died in 1818.

Could be the John Hendry who's will, dated 21 Mar 1818 names his brother, Robert, as exec. along with John Murphy who married into the family. No wife's name is mentioned; same for the minor children (2). Shame. - rhg
John married Mary McDuffie daughter of Mister McDuffie. Mary was born about 1740.

From Harvey book. Ms. Harvey notes that John Thomas Blank of Burgaw, NC is supposed to belong to this branch of the family. - rhg
+ 9 M ii Alexander Hendry Jr.
10 M iii Charles Hendry was born about 1750 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. He died before Mar 1800.

One family source claims he died on the same day as brother James in 1816. - rhg Harvey book claims he died 16 Mar 1800. N.C. Court Minutes for New Hanover Co NC on 4 Apr 1791 states: Deed proved: Will Henry to Charles Henry by John Henry. Charles Hendry was a juror on May 31, 1793. John And Simon Sellars were jurors on the same day. Aug 28, 1794: Charles Henry acknowledges deed to George Davis. On Sept. 23, 1795: Deeds proved from James Hendry, William Hendry and Alexander Hendry; by James Hendry who acknowledged deed for himself and proved it as to the other grantors; and James Hendry to William Hendry proved by Charles Hendry. On Monday, 16 Mar 1800, in Wilmington, the estate of Charles Hendry, deceased, appointed James Hendry and Alexander Hendry Administrators, and bond was set at 1200 (pounds). Power of Attorney from Charles to Alexander Henry was proven and ordered to be registered in November 1808. // - all from Harvey book. - rhg
11 M iv Robert Hendry was born about 1750 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. He died in New Hanover Co NC.

Although we were told by one family member that Robert was a son of Alexander and Flora Sellars, the others don't remember a Robert in the oral history that was handed down. We cannot find anything to substantiate a Robert as a child of this couple. We're leaving it in the gedcom so others might be able to refute or prove it. - rhg Anna and Roger Dodson of Va. found estates papers for Robert's brother, John. It would appear that Robert does, indeed, belong here. - rhg
12 F v Isabella "Bell" Hendry was born about 1750 in Isle of Arran,Bute,Scotland. She died in New Hanover Co NC.

Never married.
+ 13 M vi James Hendry
+ 14 M vii William Hendry
