Summary: Family correspondence and papers of a Cumberland County, North
Carolina family who came to NC from Scotland in the 'Argyll Colony' of 1739.
gentlemen/adventurers included: Coll McAlester of Balinakill (a property in
Kintyre, Argyllshire), his wife Janet McNeill of the family of Lossit in Kintyre,
and five of their six children. . . including Hector and Alexander. Hector
returned to Scotland (temporarily, it was said) but was held there in Scotland; leaving
brother and second eldest son, Alexander, with the responsibility of the family
in NC (including Hector's children by his first wife). . . more on McAllister family and others. . .
. . . transcript copy of Jean Colvin's 1761 Covenant with God. The folder marked,
"Estates" contains an undated contemporary copy of the will of Alexander Colvin of
Colvin Hall, 1774.
Alexander McAllister md. (1) Flora McNeill (d/o Neill Du
McNeill of Ardelay) and they had: Coll, Grisella, Janet and Neill.
He married (2nd) [alt. source says 3rd] on 14 July 1763 to Jean COLVIN,
(d/o Alexander Colvin) who was born on the ship during the voyage from Scotland
to NC -- 20 Sep 1740. They had: Margaret, Alexander b. 1766; d. 1823;
Hector, Flora, Mary, Ronald, Charles, John, Catherine,
Angus and Isabella b. 1782. Son Hector became Col. Hector McAllister, Sheriff
of Cumberland County, N.C.
Their daughter, Flora, married Col. John Colvin in 1792.
Their children: Alexander, John, Charles, James, M.D., Mary J., Henry
DeRosset, William, and Timothy.
Only Alexander and William married and had issue.
